This pretzel, found hanging in a bakery window in Landshut, has to be the biggest pretzel I have ever seen. Actually there were multiples; one in each window.
Yes, Bavarians eat two breakfasts. For some the first breakfast is very early in the morning, so the between meal snack, is white sausage, a fresh pretzel with sweet mustard and a wheat beer. I ate mine for lunch.

is now in full swing. If the store windows in Landshut are any indication, the dirndls will be brightly colored and/or checked. Unfortunately we won't get to check it out personally, but fellow bloggers at Schnitzelbahn have lots of photos of the fun.

It started rather innocently when I needed a shopping bag. You know, the reusable bag you take into the grocery store. I never remember mine. But, a long, long time ago, before reusable bags were popular in the US, I got an ugly freebee from some store when we were traveling in France. I stuck that bag in the purse I use for traveling and that ugly bag came in handy more times than I am willing to admit. So handy that it ended up going home with a grateful friend.
I was on the hunt for a replacement and found one of these:
A lightweight nylon bag that folds up nicely thanks to an attached elastic band. Mine is green, not black. It was an impulse purchase. I didn't realize it was made by a German company, winner of multiple Red Dot Awards. I also didn't know this little bag comes in what seems like a hundred colors and patterns.
Then one day while shopping, I found this:
and used it to replace the aging, ugly duffel bag I was dragging to the fitness studio. My bag looks exactly like this one.
And now, much to my delight, I learned they make that same bag in a size perfect for meeting the requirements for a Ryanair carry-on bag. I'm now looking forward rather than dreading my next flight with them even though I haven't even planned it yet.

Although the skies were gray when we were walking along the Rhein, yellow brightened our day. All of these photos were taken during our two hour walk along a portion of the Rhein-Burg trail, a marked walking path through the Rhein Valley.
is one of the small towns along the Rhein in an area called "Mittelrhein," a UNESCO world heritage site. After our walk along the river, the rain stopped, so we stopped here for lunch and a Riesling.
The town is known for its wine and its well preserved medieval wall and towers, proof that you don't have to go to the very popular Rothenburg ob der Tauber to walk on an old wall. In Oberwesel, we learned, thanks to our restaurant hosts, you can even spend the night in one of the old towers. Or you can sleep at the castle that overlooks the Rhine.
(or Rhine, in English) on a rainy Saturday a couple of weeks back, brought us these beautiful views. This is why we try not to let the less than perfect weather prevent us from getting out and seeing something new.
